Gittin (Divorces)

According to Torah law, a civil divorce is not enough to release a married couple from the bonds of matrimony. That can only occur through the transmission, from husband to wife, of a bill of divorce, commonly known by its Aramaic name, get. This document provides both the mechanism by which the divorce is implemented and proof of the dissolution of the marriage in the event either party wishes to remarry. Without a get, irrespective of how long a couple has been separated or how many civil proceedings have occurred, the marriage remains intact according to halachah. 

Closure
Marriage is not merely an agreement between two individuals that can be dissolved at will. It is a union of souls. The same G d who prescribed a process for fusing souls – which occurs beneath the chuppah (wedding canopy) – also provided detailed instructions as to how these two souls can revert to mutual independence.

Comfort & Convenience
The Rabbinical Council makes every effort to minimize any discomfort or difficulty during this difficult chapter in the participants' lives. The procedure consists mainly of a sofer (scribe) writing the get document, and takes approximately 90 minutes. There are not questions as to why the marriage is ending, nor assignment of blame.
